'The Wolverine' First Official Picture: Hugh Jackman May Have Been Exercising Lately

We haven’t received much in the way of official media for The Wolverine, the sixth film in the X-Men film franchise and the first sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. For awhile there, it appeared Darren Aronofsky would direct, essentially guaranteeing the weirdest comic book adaptation ever; however, Aronofsky backed out and the film was given to the safer choice, James Mangold.

But what the film may have lost in art-house originality, it appears to have gained in creepily-veined muscle, as it appears star Hugh Jackman may have done a push-up or two in preparation for his return as Wolverine. That’s right—Jackman is once again lean and mean as he takes on the role of Wolverine, despite the fact that Wolverine was/is a rather stoutly muscular character who stands 5’3” or so, and Jackman is over 6’ and appears to be going for the 0% body fat look.

The Wolverine is an adaptation of Frank Miller and Chris Claremont’s early 1980s graphic novel series, which concerns Wolverine’s pre-X-Men journey to Japan, his one-time fiancé, and his fateful clash with Shingen Yashida, a Yakuza crime boss.

Not much else is known about the film, aside from the fact that it is set for a July 26, 2013 release date, and that, hey, it can’t be much worse than X-Men Origins: Wolverine, right?
